GCSAS (Ghent Center for South Asian Studies)

De onderzoeksgroep GCSAS biedt een platform waar onderzoekers van de UGent met Zuid-Azië als studiedomein met elkaar in contact treden. De leden van GCSAS bestuderen verschillende aspecten van de Zuid-Aziatische maatschappij en cultuur, gaande van de rijke literaire geschiedenis (literatuurstudie) en filosofie tot diverse religieuze tradities (religiestudies), van materiële culturen (archeologie en kunstgeschiedenis), de talrijke talen (linguïstiek) tot de snelle ontwikkelingen van de cinema (mediastudies) enzovoort. Deze studies zijn zowel historisch als hedendaags, zowel lokaal als transnationaal. Er wordt een waaier aan methoden en theoretische achtergronden uit de humane en sociale wetenschappen gebruikt. Alle leden wenden hun kennis van Zuid-Aziatische talen aan (in het bijzonder Sanskrit en Hindi), bij het lezen van teksten, het bestuderen van media, of het communiceren met de plaatselijke bevolking tijdens veldwerk. Het academisch onderzoek aan de vakgroep Indische Talen en Culturen beslaat zeer diverse aspecten van de Indische geschiedenis, maatschappij, religie, taal en cultuur.
